2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure notified employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address community desires.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the entire text from Ismailer's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a sharper vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.

The belief in this project grows every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. Following several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the recent years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the weeks to ahead.

Game Information and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary reads. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and trust your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation progresses.
