Israel and Hamas begin indirect talks in the Egyptian city on American Gaza ceasefire initiative.
News Agency
Third-party negotiations focused on achieving a comprehensive deal on a American ceasefire proposal to halt hostilities in Gaza have begun in the Red Sea resort of the negotiation site.
Palestinian and Egyptian officials have stated that the meetings are concentrating on "preparing the environment" for a possible exchange that would result in the freeing of all detained individuals in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners.
The group stated it accepts the negotiation framework in part, but has not responded to several essential conditions - such as its weapons surrender and political participation in Gaza.
The Israeli leader said on the weekend that he anticipated declaring the freeing of hostages "soon"
Conflict Timeline
The talks, which will see regional and international officials conducting mediation with representatives from both the conflicting parties individually, come on the eve of the second anniversary of the armed assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were lost their lives and 251 individuals were taken hostage.
The defense forces began military actions in Gaza in response. From that point, approximately 67,160 have been lost their lives by armed interventions in Gaza, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry.
Peace Plan Details
The detailed initiative, which has been endorsed by the Trump administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, outlines an prompt cessation to hostilities and the liberation of 48 detained individuals, only 20 of whom are considered surviving, in compensation of multiple hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
The proposal specifies that once both sides agree to the plan "humanitarian support will be immediately sent into the conflict zone"
It also specifies that Hamas would have no involvement in governing Gaza, and it allows for an future Palestinian sovereignty.
Latest Updates
Recently, officials replied to the proposal in a declaration, in which the group consented "to free all captured individuals, both living and dead, following the swap arrangement outlined in the US initiative" - if the required situation for the exchanges are satisfied.
It did not specifically mention or approve the detailed initiative but said it "reaffirms its commitment to relinquish the management of the conflict zone to a governing council of independents, based on regional unity and regional endorsement"
The declaration made no mention of one of the key demands of the plan – that Hamas accept its weapons surrender and to playing no further role in the leadership of Gaza.
International Response
Local residents characterized Hamas' response to the negotiation initiative as surprising, after days of indications that the faction was preparing to reject or at least substantially modify its acceptance of the American initiative.
Instead, the militant group excluded its traditional "red lines" in the official statement, a move many view as a indication of international influence.
International and regional representatives have endorsed the proposal. The governing body, which governs areas of the disputed regions, has described the American initiatives as "authentic and resolute"
Iran - which has been one of Hamas's main sponsors for many years - has also currently expressed its backing of the US proposal.
Current Situation
Armed attacks persisted in several parts of the conflict zone on Monday prior to the negotiations starting.
Israel is conducting an combat campaign in the urban area, which it has stated is intended to securing the release of the outstanding captives.
A spokesperson, speaking for Gaza's local emergency services, stated that "no aid trucks have been permitted entry to Gaza City since the offensive began one month prior"
"There are still bodies we cannot access from zones under defense force authority" he said.
Countless residents of the urban center have been forced to flee after the armed services required departures to a designated "humanitarian area" in the south, but further countless people are considered to have persisted.
The defense representative has cautioned that those who persist during the offensive would be "combatants and their sympathizers"
In the recent period, 21 individuals have been lost their lives in Gaza and a further 96 harmed, the regional health administration said in its latest update.
Foreign correspondents have been prohibited by the government from accessing the conflict zone independently since the commencement of the war, making verifying claims from both sides difficult.
