Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Self-Referential Series To Date

Marvel is aware that viewers might be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to incorporate this exact concept into their next superhero series.

That's right, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer, which premiered on Oct. 10, also subtly pushed the Wonder Man launch date back from its initial end of 2025 slot into early 2026.

Why another superhero film? Everyone is weary of superheroes. Why watch them in the theater? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an chance to surprise audiences. To reimagine the whole category of storytelling.

The reporter responds: "Have you considered about the cast?"

The trailer then transitions to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the conversation on his phone, and the trailer ends.

Key Details About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stars Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a film star who transforms into a super-powered being (the hero Wonder Man).

The supporting cast includes actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.

Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach

We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio intends to poke some fun at itself.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is all in on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the celebrity appeal of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
