Nuno Declares Building the Hammers Identity His Number One Priority
The new West Ham manager believes it will require patience to develop a clear philosophy at West Ham United. Having previously managed Forest, who is settling in to his recent appointment, wants to bond with the team’s heritage on an deeper level.
Learning the West Ham Way
Brought in after the sudden exit of his predecessor, Nuno mentioned that experienced club employees have been filling him in about life at West Ham. When asked about his understanding of the club’s famous identity, he beamed and admitted that it is interpreted differently—some see it as gung-ho football, while different supporters prioritize heart and determination.
“This is what I’m working to grasp on a daily basis,” he said. “It’s more than knowing—we have to feel it. I need time to absorb it. When it becomes part of us, we must embed it within.”
He stressed that emotion is what counts, rather than theoretical knowledge. Regarding philosophy and identity, Nuno admitted they are still far from achieving it. “Simply saying the ‘West Ham way’—we must build it, we must feel it.”
Initial Phase and Long Road Ahead
The new manager’s start began with an encouraging equal result on the road. Questioned about how close he is to developing a clear style, he answered, “Personally, I feel very far. It’s difficult and needs total commitment at the club. However, it’s our main focus.”
Frequently, there is a demand from the fanbase for entertaining style. The former manager, the club’s top West Ham boss, eventually faced criticism due to his defensive mindset. Subsequent managers found it tough altering the on-field approach in the post-Moyes era.
Playing Philosophy and Player Roles
The responsibility now lies with Nuno to choose whether winning are a higher priority than entertainment. West Ham have conceded fourteen goals in the opening six Premier League games and are languishing in 19th place.
“What determines the team’s approach is not only the head coach,” he explained. “It’s the squad that influences our approach. We must strike an equilibrium between defense and attack. It’s not possible to pushing up unbalanced, because that opens up spaces for our opponents. We must maintain defensive shape, while also prioritizing our plan after winning possession.”
Player Availability
Nuno’s side may see the return of key defenders ahead of the next trip to the Emirates. Furthermore, the manager left the door open a possible recall for an experienced midfielder who was left out in the previous game. The player previously worked under Nuno earlier, though his loan spell was ended early.
