Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
