The English Team versus The South African Squad – Women’s Global Tournament Kicks Off
Silence please! All discussions have ended, for now at least, and England's global campaign is about to begin. Unfortunately, they begin against a formidable opponent against South Africa. On the upside, they start with a tough game opposing the Proteas. Success today could provide immediate impetus for England and validate the cautious confidence of their pre-tournament chatter.
Pre-Tournament Momentum
An excellent win against the Australians in their last warm-up has increased that confidence, although the individual performances from Alice Capsey (remaining unbeaten on 88) and Sarah Glenn (taking 5 wickets for 32 runs) presented Charlotte Edwards with a minor dilemma.
Edwards is a serial winner, meaning there is little chance of England setting their sights low. But from a distance they are in the slightly unusual position with a well-defined expectation for the event.
Competition Outlook
Falling short of the semis might come as a small upset, despite the improvement among the traditional also-rans. Making it to the championship match in front of the Aussies or Indians, the primary frontrunners to claim the title, would represent a major feat. If the English side triumphs… it's best not to entertain that thought. It’s way too early for those kinds of predictions.
The game today starts at 10:30 AM British Summer Time.
