The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
