The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged the Gap Between Rock Generations

Marking 20 years since the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the means to become a rock star. Figuratively speaking, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who's nailed the epic four-minute instrumental break before a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the screen in time with the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar series which made a significant impact on numerous of the artists included, showcasing decades-old groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges in securing the recordings – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced the project would flop. But once the game took off, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for exposing their kids to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish group the Answer had their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist remembers the way the game revived older hits to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered music that was past it, but then when it was featured on the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased stateside, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized game editions that focused on each band’s catalogue and related stories, imagery and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly earned the group more money than any of their records. It moved well over 500,000 units upon release, while sales of their songs rose significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism within the community. Recently, a streamer completed an impressive attempt featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar gameplay and extensive customisation options. The song is difficult even in expert mode, let alone played at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer claimed it took months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should pick up a real gun and go to war,” notes musician the artist.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it risked eclipsing all other accomplishments. Recently, the song was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a rock star in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community alive, with set to be a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun production on their first music game. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist with new generations.”
