Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
